In herbal medicine today, blessed thistle is used as a contraceptive and to treat cancer as well as infections, heart and liver ailments, and fevers. Experimental evidence points to its effectiveness as a treatment for infections. Animal studies indicate antihumor effects, but there is no record of studies that show it to be safe or effective for humans. Its effect on the heart and liver and its efficacy as a contraceptive have not been studied.
