Chinese Lantern

Physalis Alkekengi

Although modern herbals occasionaly mention Chinese Lantern fruits as a diuretic, there is no scientific evidence to falidate this use. Hikers, in particular, appreciate the fresh fruit, which can also be made into jellies and jams. The dainty pods, or lanterns, are often dried and used in autumn and winter floral arrangements.

Unripe fruits may be toxic, and the ripe fruits eaten in large quantities may cause diarrhea.
